Flemish Film Classics: Malpertuis + Q&A with Harry Kümel

As part of Flemish Film Classics, a landmark celebration of Flemish cinema taking place across London from 12–15 June 2026, The Garden Cinema will present a special screening of Malpertuis, one of the most extraordinary works in Belgian film history.
Curated by Belgian film historian Wouter Hessels in partnership with Flanders House, CINEMATEK and other Belgian cultural institutions, Flemish Film Classics brings rare restorations of Belgian films to London audiences as part of the Barbican’s Cinema Restored programme.
About the Film
Directed by Harry Kümel and starring Orson Welles, Malpertuis (1971) is a phantasmagoric gothic masterpiece widely regarded as one of the great achievements of Belgian cinema.
The story follows sailor Jan as he arrives at the mysterious Malpertuis, a strange mansion inhabited by eccentric relatives bound together by an inheritance and an even darker secret. What unfolds is a visually stunning mythological fantasy filled with mystery, symbolism, and unforgettable imagery.
The screening will be introduced by Wouter Hessels and followed by a special Zoom Q&A with director Harry Kümel.
